Kazakhstan 50-TENGE 2013 Brandt's Hedgehog
Brandt's Hedgehog (Paraechinus hypomelas) is a desert dwelling hedgehog and the only hedgehog species found in Kazakhstan. This 25 cm long hedgehog (500-1,000 g) uses the "cuddling tactic" often, but still employs the "jumping attack". I'd like to see that.
Interestingly, this coin names the little beastie as Hemiechinus hypomelas, but as far as I can tell there is no such animal. The genus Hemiechinus has two species: Long-eared hedgehog (H. auritus) and Indian Long-eared Hedgehog (H. collaris). Apparently Brandt's Hedgehog is similar to long-eared hedgehogs.
The denomination "tenge" means "scale" in Kazakh.
