India 1-RUPEE (KM385) Bengal Tiger

This circulating coin was issued in 2010 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Reserve Bank of India.

I was surprised to see this cat called a "lion" in online resources, and in the Krause catalogue. In fact, the first choice of logo in 1935 was the East India Company Double Mohur, which features a lion, which you can see here.

It turns out the Reserve Bank of India decided to replace the lion with a Bengal Tiger, which is their national animal. And even without colour to guide you, there is no comparison between the body shape of a tiger (as seen on this coin), and a lion, as seen on the Double Mohur.
